Merchant of the Week: Biggie’s Clam Bar

The folks behind Biggies.

Got a hankering for fresh seafood and other boardwalk-style grub?  A local Hoboken treasure, Biggie’s Clam Bar has been serving raw clams on the half shell since 1941.  That’s when founder Joseph Yaccarino (aka “Joe Biggie”) made his career move from young comedian to full-time clam man.  Joe Biggie started his business with little more than a couple of pails on the street and the help of his son, Michael.  Eventually, he moved on to a full pushcart and finally established Biggie’s Clam Bar in its current brick-and-mortar Madison Street location in 1946.  Luckily, you can order a delicious bite of Hoboken’s rich culinary history from Biggie’s Clam Bar on

Although Biggie’s Clam Bar is right around the corner from where Frank Sinatra grew up, its real claims to fame are the clams and other tasty boardwalk-style eats served up by the same family that started the business in the 1940s (Biggie’s was awarded New Jersey Monthly’s 2002 Family Business of the Year).  Biggie’s sells over 800 clams a day: raw clams, clams oregenata, clams steamed in beer, and roasted clams.  The most popular menu item, however, is their Cheese Steak Sandwich.  Sausage & Peppers sandwiches, fried shrimp, fried calamari, mussels marinara, ribs, chicken in a basket, hamburgers, chili dogs, and fries are just some of the other boardwalk cuisine options you can order from Biggie’s Clam Bar.  The restaurant, which is a true family-run business, also serves Italian pasta dishes like Rigatoni Arrabiata and Linguine with White Clam Sauce (of course!) for dinner.

Generations of families have moved in and out of Hoboken over the past century, but one thing stays the same – everyone goes wild for Biggie’s.
