Hope you had a nice Pi day! Despite reminders on social media, Google, and a 2009 House of Representatives resolution, many Americans didn’t observe it because they were unaware that it even happened. March 14th or 3/14 has been designated “Pi Day” to celebrate the mathematical constant π (pi). Why should we care? Because it’s an awesome excuse to eat a pizza pie!
Not only is the constant a homophone of the word “pie” but, like a Jedi, it’s been with you every single time you have eaten a Neapolitan style (round) pizza. Provided the person who cut the pizza sliced it through the center, the combined lengths of the inner sides of your pizza will divide into the length of the entire pizza (its circumference) roughly 3.14 times. That’s right, π times! It doesn’t matter if you get an extra large pizza from Papa John’s (East Village, L.E.S, Downtown Brooklyn) or a traditional individual size pie from Keste, the number remains “constant.” There is so much π in every pie, there’s no excuse to not order one every day. After all, it’s Pi o’clock (3:14) two times a day.
For you pizza-eating math-lovers (myself included), next year’s Pi Day will be particularly special. At 9:26 AM and 54 seconds, the date will be 3/14/15, 9:26:54 which is π rounded to the 9th decimal place.
Even if you hate math, here are a few other excuses to order pizza and indulge in the most delicious foods on the planet!
October is “National Pizza Month.” I, personally observe it by eating at least one slice of pizza a day and can’t recommend it enough. With well over a 1,000 pizzerias in the five boroughs, there is no better excuse for pizza than celebrating its existence and abundance in NYC!
When in Little Italy…New York City is fortunate enough to have its very own “Little Italy” so if you happen to live, work, or be visiting someone in the vicinity, take the opportunity to get a pie delivered! A couple of my area recommendations are L’asso and Lil Frankie’s.
Surprise Date Night In…A fancy pizza delivered to your front door, coupled with a nice bottle of wine can add some romance to an otherwise typical TV/Movie night. Opt for the high end ingredients from places like Three of Cups or Forcella.
Friday, rhymes with Pieday…T.G.I.Pieday! What better way to end the week?
