Over the next few weeks we’ll be highlighting our Market Operators and the great work they do.

Tell us about your market, do you live there?

Our Market is in Waco, Texas. I graduated from Baylor University (where I met the market owner Jake Dahms) in Waco and wanted to bring goods and services to students and the Waco community. College brought me to Waco and this business is why I stayed. I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

How did you enter the food delivery industry?

After college, Jake and I wanted to work in tech and restaurants, and [we wanted to] supply students with local services. I wanted to get into a niche market before it exploded. Our [local Market’s] founder, Jake Dahms started it in 2013 from his house. I came one year later to get into business operations and to be a business owner. Jake’s original partner was leaving and he needed a new right hand man. We went to 100 orders in that first full year and that’s when we got an office.

How do you feel your business differentiates from the competition?

We’re trying our best to personalize the Waco location. Personal connections with the restaurant owners and operators are so important. They often prefer to speak with local people if they run into issues or errors. We also train our drivers in person. They know there is someone local to help them if they run into issues or questions. We do a two hour driver orientation with training and paperwork. I let all my drivers know that they are the face of our business and they often will get better tips when they care about what they are doing. We show our drivers we care about them and we care about our community. Our personal touch led us to be a “Locals Love us” favorite for several years. We try to partner with local fraternities and sororities at Baylor. We usually set up a booth to give out coupon codes. We also help with local fundraisers in town.

Any fun facts about your market that you’d like us to know?

Baylor athletics is really growing and helping to grow the popularity of the school. In the last 5 or 6 years there have been $300m in renovations in the city of Waco, and the city is in the process of building a riverwalk. We also have the second largest city park in the nation – Cameron Park. It’s one of my favorite places in the state of Texas. The tourism of Magnolia [Magnolia Table brands] has brought in new restaurants, bars and businesses. We’re known for our local BBQ. A fun fact people don’t know is that Dr. Pepper started in Waco and we actually have Dr. Pepper flavored BBQ wings.

Tell us about yourself, what do you do with your time outside of the business?

When I’m not working, I was raised to play soccer. I don’t play sports as much anymore but I watch them often. Cycling is my favorite hobby right now. I also run and hike, and watch a lot of movies and play board games.
