Market Operator Highlight: Justin Thompson- Bloomington IN

delivery.com powers the neighborhood economy by enabling consumers and corporate offices to order online from their favorite restaurants and local businesses. Many of our Market Operators live within the communities they serve. They support local restaurants and create job opportunities. Over the next few weeks we’ll be highlighting our Market Operators and the great work they do.

Tell us about your market, do you live there?

I live in Bloomington and it’s my hometown. I’ve been living here since my parents moved here when I was about 1 1/2 years old.

How did you enter the food delivery industry?

I first got involved with food delivery by responding to a Craigslist ad to be a delivery driver. I was looking for part time work post-grad and at the time I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in Bloomington because I had my sights set on moving abroad or out West. [Mr. Delivery (now delivery.com)] had been looking for new drivers in Bloomington and a new Market Manager. During my driver interview I voiced interest in the management position and was hired. I was able to effectively hire additional drivers and onboard more restaurants to grow the business while in the management position. I put together a crew of friends to pass out free food and fliers on Indiana University’s campus that proved to be really successful. Eventually I was offered an opportunity to purchase and own the Bloomington Market myself. I was able to accept this great opportunity that I had played a role in building first hand. I was able to mitigate a lot of the risk prior to the decision to purchase the Bloomington Market.

How does delivery.com differ from the competition?

We have long standing relationships with the local restaurants. I know the restaurant owners and managers personally. I also have great relationships with my drivers. I meet each driver face to face before they get started and give them tutorials. Additionally, in the past, we’ve partnered with local organizations in the community and the University.

Any fun facts about your market that you’d like us to know?

One of our restaurant partners is a local ice cream shop called Chocolate Moose and they came up with a ‘Moose Horn’, a frozen banana dipped in chocolate and served with ice cream. Also, every year we have a Taste of Bloomington which is an outdoor event where hundreds of food vendors come and serve some of their best dishes surrounded by live music.

Tell us about yourself, what do you do with your time outside of the business?

I love to travel and adventure and am an adrenaline junkie. I fly paramotors, love mountain biking and caving and being outdoors. My wife and I have an RV and have visited about 20 national parks.
